From Concept to Creation

Creating ControlHub involved an iterative process, focusing on user research, wireframing, prototyping, and refining the interface to meet diverse user needs.

Research and User Insights

To create a solution tailored to diverse user needs, I analyzed user behavior and gathered insights through interviews and competitor research.”

Initial User Research

To understand user needs and challenges, I conducted interviews with individuals from different tech backgrounds. I also analyzed existing remote control and smart device apps to identify common pain points, such as app-switching fatigue, complex interfaces, and lack of customization options.

Key Findings

The research revealed several common frustrations among users. Those managing multiple smart devices found it tedious to switch between separate apps for each device, leading to app fatigue and inefficiency. Busy users, like parents, expressed a need for quick, intuitive access to controls without time-consuming setup processes. Non-tech-savvy users, particularly older individuals, struggled with complex interfaces and numerous remote controls. In contrast, tech enthusiasts sought greater customization options and control over their devices to enhance efficiency. These insights guided the design process, ensuring the app could cater to a wide range of user needs.

Personas

Sarah (Busy Mom):

  • Research insight: “Sarah needs a fast, intuitive interface to save time, since she’s often juggling multiple responsibilities.”
  • How it shaped design: “We prioritized large, easy-to-find controls on the home screen to minimize navigation.”

Nick (Tech Enthusiast):

  • Research insight: “Tech enthusiasts like Nick value customization and control over their smart devices.”
  • How it shaped design: “Advanced settings were added, allowing users to customize device functions, rearrange buttons, and set preferences.”

Dave (Elderly User):

  • Research insight: “Older users often feel overwhelmed by complex device setups and interfaces.”
  • How it shaped design: “Simplified navigation, clear labels, and large touch targets were implemented to make the app more accessible.”

User-Centered Design Decisions

Based on the research findings, the design process focused on creating a balance between simplicity and customization. For busy users, a streamlined dashboard with large, easy-to-access controls reduced the need for navigation and app-switching. The pairing process was simplified to require minimal steps, ensuring a smooth setup experience. For non-tech-savvy users, clear labels, intuitive icons, and accessible Light/Dark Modes were implemented to enhance usability. Additionally, advanced users were given the ability to customize settings, rearrange controls, and access in-depth features through an advanced menu, providing flexibility without compromising simplicity.

Wireframes & User Flow

To define the core structure and user flow, I created low-fidelity wireframes. These focused on essential features such as device pairing, the main control dashboard, and customizable settings.

High-Fidelity Designs

Building on the wireframes, I refined the design with a consistent color scheme, typography, and interactive elements, ensuring both accessibility and a visually appealing interface.

Final Product & Reflection

Project Takeaways

This project taught me the importance of designing for accessibility while maintaining flexibility for advanced users. Balancing diverse user needs required careful iteration and usability testing. I also deepened my expertise with prototyping tools like Figma, creating interactive designs that reflect real-world use cases.

The Result

ControlHub is a seamless solution for managing smart devices, designed to meet the needs of both tech-savvy and non-tech users. The final product features intuitive navigation, efficient device pairing, and accessibility through customizable Light/Dark modes.
